Hey, Kevin -- Happy New Year! The most complete Zappa bio is "Zappa: Electric Don Quixote" by Neil Slaven. (352 pages)
A great book that focuses only on 1964-70 is "Necessity is... The Early Years of FZ & Mothers of Invention" by Billy James. (155 pages)
And of course, "The Real Frank Zappa Book" by FZ himself is essential -- not a complete bio but contains many great anecdotes as well as political/sociological rants.
Avoid any FZ books by Ben Watson -- pretentious drivel with tons of factual inaccuracies.

Cheer up, Matt! Glad to see you posting again! Can you recommend a Zappa biography? (I need some winter reading.)
